EPA R4 Mapping Workgroup Requests Input

EPA R4’s Mapping Workgroup has two primary goals: (1) achieving consistency of data collection/ analysis and the resulting mapping efforts of its states; and (2) developing a valid approach for recommending changes to some of the county zone designations that were originally defined in the EPA Map of Radon Zones (Zones 1, 2 or 3). The results will be used in part to better characterize the seriousness and extent of the radon problem in Region 4 states, and to update the zone classifications. We are seeking input and lessons learned from others who have attempted or completed these types of efforts. We will appreciate practical suggestions, general thoughts or suggestions, as well as examples of protocols or maps you may wish to attach. I can be reached at brooks.patsy@epa.gov for questions about this request.

We’ve developed summaries/fact sheets from some of the original documents developed prior to release of the EPA Map of Radon Zones. If anyone is interested in those we’d be glad to share them. We also have a series of papers collected over the years, so let me know if they might be of value to any of you also. If there’s enough interest I can probably post them to the Radon Research section. If anyone has questions feel free to contact me at brooks.patsy@epa.gov.

Our next workgroup meeting is August 17-18, however more will follow. For those who may not be aware, EPA Region 4 includes the states of AL, FL, GA, KY, MS, NC, SC and TN. Responses before or after those dates are welcome.
