By now, we are all aware that some granite emits enough radon to raise indoor concentrations. A client with Jupurana Bordeaux had 3x the radon in her kitchen as she had in her bedroom at the far end of the house. This was an older coastal California home, built with little insulation or weatherstripping. It's a bit unnerving to think what the same granite could have done in a modern, well sealed home.

So far, three simulataneous radon tests have been the accepted way to determine whether radon is emitted by granite or infiltrating from below the building. I'm starting some tests with film badges to measure gamma radiation from granite. There seems to be about a 60% correlation between gamma and radon emanation, so film badges will be one more tool in the tool kit. Badges are relatively inexpensive and anyone can use them without scientific training. I'm paying about $5 each for mine. That's a lot less than I paid for my Ludlum 19, plus the film badges give the client a lab report on the dose.
