The newborn radon testing program has been an effective method of testing homes in high-risk areas of radon across New York State since 2004. Over the past 5 years there has been a slow but steady increase in number of test results generated from this program. In June 2009, we partnered with the New York State Congenital Malformation Registry in regard to the hospitals they work with. From their list of specific contact information at each hospital, we were able to increase our number of participating hospitals from 25 in July of 2008 to 61 in August of 2009. This increase in hospitals put our yearly distribution of free radon detector application information pamphlets to 46,000. It also increased our outreach campaign covering USEPA radon Zones 1, 2, and 3 in New York.

To keep up with our radon application packet distribution, we have partnered with the New York State Office of Mental Health Capital District Psychiatric Center to perform the collating of materials that are distributed to the newborn parents. They have been able to meet the demands and continue to perform an excellent job.

Our goals are: to increase the number of hospitals participating, especially in Zone 1 counties, to perform more follow-ups on elevated radon readings, and to recommend radon mitigation system installation upon elevated radon levels.
