According to an email I received from the California Radon Program Director, George Faggella, the California budget crisis has caused the Department of Public Health Radon Program to be dropped. George says he will try to keep the web site up, but will be unable to update it or provide any other radon support because he is being reassigned to a water quality department within the Department of Public Health. I have tried to find out where the decision was made to cut the program; at the State Budget level or the Department of Public Health level. Small difference, since it's the budget crisis hitting home in either case. How this will effect radon professionals and the general public in California and across the nation is not clear, but it can't be good. Nor is it clear if Governor Schwarzenegger will extend the Radon Action Month Proclamation he made in January 2008 for another year, as there is no department to carry out the plan. Here is his email:
Hi Jeff
I have some bad news for you. There is no longer going to be a Radon Program in California. It has been cut because of the budget crisis. I am being transferred to another unit and will be working in drinking water.
It was nice working with you and I appreciate all the effort that you have put into radon. Keep up the good fight.
Thanks
George Faggella
