Per EPA’s contract with the NAHB-Research Center, the radon data from their 2008 membership survey is in.
1-Nationally an estimated 539,000 SFH were built; 66,000 (12.2%) of them included radon-resistant features. Although the absolute number of RRNC homes decreased significantly (109,000 down to 65,700), the percentage increased, from 11.8% in 2007 to 12.2% in 2008.
2-In Zone 1 an estimated 133,100 SFH were built; 41,200 (31%) of them included radon-resistant features. Although the absolute number of RRNC homes decreased significantly (62,900 down to 41,200), the percentage increased, from 28.6% in 2007 to 31% in 2008.
In the wider housing market, NAHB/Commerce Dept. reported today that:
1-sales of newly built homes declined 11.3% in November to an annual rate of 355,000 (compare that to the 539,000 in 2008).
2-sales of new SFH declined in 3 of 4 regions (Northeast by 3.3%, South by 21.1% and in the West by 9.2%); sales rose by 21.4% in the Midwest
3-there is a nearly 8 month inventory of new homes (c. 235,000) at the current sales pace.
