November 11, 2010 - RadonLeaders

The American Public Health Association (APHA) 138th Annual Meeting and Expo took place this week in Denver, Colorado. With an estimated 12,000 number of attendees, the goal of this conference is to join everyone in the public health community – health practitioners, academics, government agencies and public health professionals – to share, learn and expand their knowledge in the current issues affecting the health of the American public.

Along with sessions such as “Current Topics in Cancer Prevention” and “Healthy Housing and Green Buildings,” this conference also included a session on radon testing and radon-induced lung cancer, entitled “Radon: Awareness and Health Impacts.”

Nour Abdo, MPH, BVMS, CHES, from New Mexico State University discussed the relationship between radon exposure and lung cancer prevalence in sections of Colorado, New Mexico and Texas. Abdo also included information on cleft lip/cleft palate births and the level of radioactivity in water sources in Harris County, Texas.

Sarah Kercsmar, PhD from the University of Kentucky, led a test your home and win contest. This was followed by University of Illinois at Springfield graduate student Ajay Myneni, who covered the link between radon gas densities and the location of abandoned coal mines in Sangamon County, Illinois.
