Merry Christmas dear friends,
Thank you for all of your previous support especially the past two years. CanSAR is officially a nonprofit 501 c3 organization as of June, 2010.
CanSAR’s goal for National Radon Action Month is to have supporters on the steps of the state capitol in at least 10 to states in the nation on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at 12:00 noon. CanSAR needs your help to make this happen. I will be in Springfield, IL, on the Capitol steps.
It is my desire to have participation in your state to help raise awareness and increase the education of the public about the danger of living and working in elevated levels of this silent killer which takes the lives of approximately 21,000 individuals each year. To accomplish this mission several things need to transpire:
• Publicity is a must--your newspapers, radio stations and TV networks. I truly believe that if the public sees and hears about dedicated individuals braving the cold to stand on the Capitol steps during National Radon Action Month--January--attention to this little known killer will be garnered. A flyer for the news media would be helpful giving times accompanied with radon facts, and the planned program, which should only be approximately 20-30 minutes in length.
• Permission from the Capitol Grounds personnel in your state must be sought. Some states require a permit and some do not, but the grounds administrator needs to be notified regardless. I can secure the permission once I know of your participation in your state and contact the grounds administration.
• “Reduce Radon” tee shirts are available for $15.00 plus postage. They definitely make a statement as you can see from last year’s pictures of “Capital Steps.” Signs are an effective added dimension. CanSAR can have a “Taking Capital Steps to Radon Action” sign made for your state and sent to you.
• To recruit participants to stand in support for radon awareness, seek out friends, family, colleagues, real estate personnel, professionals in the field of health and education, and organizations such as the American Lung Association and other lung cancer advocates.
• If there is an opportunity to distribute test kits or coupons for test kits along with informational documents concerning radon and CanSAR brochures, this would increase the chance of an audience. Having a short formal program with key individuals to speak would also highlight the event. Please take pictures. Attached you will see some of the previous pictures
• Please give me the names of the participants so they can be added to the website for the 2012 Capital Steps Campaign.
This will also be our kick off for another year for the travels of Radon TEE as we Step Up Action Against Radon! If you would like to schedule to have TEE in your community, just let me know. This year, we hope those hosting TEE will schedule it so that TEE can participate in events such as walks, runs, and other community gatherings, meetings and happenings. Just email me and I’ll get you on the calendar.
