August 17, 2012 - Jani

I love a good sequel, especially when it’s all about getting rid of radon. If you missed the Green Strides webinar, Technical Approaches to Radon Reduction in Schools, hosted by EPA and broadcasted live on July 18, 2012, then you had better get yourself current and watch the replay. To listen and follow along through the slides at the same time, open the MP3 and the PDF.

The webinar was created around a common concern voiced by many school districts, and that is, “Ok, we tested; now what?” The guest speakers from the Minnesota Department of Health, Josh Miller, Research Scientist and Josh Kerber, Environmental Research Scientist, masterfully broke down the technicalities of radon mitigation for the attendees whose technical knowledge ranged from beginner to expert. They provided an overview of how to use EPA’s Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Framework for Effective School IAQ Management, available here, to develop and follow a plan of action for radon mitigation and decision-making. Part of their plan for radon reduction includes using a continuous radon monitor for follow up testing, and using that data to make modifications to the air handling system or to install an active soil depressurization system. Their presentation is abundant with pictures and diagrams, so it’s easy to follow and to understand how a depressurization system works. The webinar was extremely well attended, as 345 individuals tuned in!

Last year, IED hosted part one of this webinar series featuring radon in schools with guest speakers from Colorado Springs School District 11, Neil Case, Chief Mechanical Systems and Dan Moors, Environmental/Life Safety Supervisor, and you can catch that replay here. Scroll down to “Webinar: Radon in Schools: What You Need to Know.” Again, to listen and follow along through the slides at the same time, open the MP3 and the PDF.
