The 2016-2021 Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan, as produced by the Alabama Comprehensive Cancer Control Coalition (ACCCC), includes radon in the Primary Prevention: Lung Cancer goal.
The vision of the plan and coalition is to strive to eliminate the burden of cancer in Alabama. In addressing prevention of lung cancer, the plan’s objective is to increase the knowledge of radon in high-risk counties as a risk factor for lung cancer. In Alabama, 15 counties have been identified as having the highest potential for elevated radon levels. They are Calhoun, Clay, Cleburne, Colbert, Coosa, Franklin, Jackson, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Shelby and Talladega.
Strategic actions are designed around promoting the use of radon testing in those high risk counties and conducting awareness campaigns in those counties regarding risk of cancer from radon. Other major risk factors in addition to radon included in the actions are exposure to secondhand smoke, and asbestos.
