Goal 5 of the Virginia Cancer Plan 2018-2022 is to reduce radon exposure to Virginians. The plan encourages Virginians to test their homes for radon noting that everyone in Virginia has a role to play in preventing and controlling cancer. Local health agencies and local organizations are to ensure access to education about the dangers of radon and access to testing kits.

Objectives are to increase the annual reported number of homes tested for radon and increase TBD the annual reported number of homes mitigated for radon by 2022 using the following strategies:

a.Promote awareness of radon in moderate/high risk areas through media campaign and other educational activities.

b. Adopt policy to require mandatory reporting of radon tests performed and mitigation systems installed.

c. Advocate to increase state funding to provide radon test kits.

d. Increase the number of eligible local jurisdictions that require radon resistant new construction techniques.

e. Expand the adoption of the community health worker model to provide education on risks of radon exposure and connection to testing and mitigation resources.
