USEPA, in “Spotlight: Successful Approaches for Reducing Radon Risk,” noted the success of the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH) in partnering with AARST to evaluate mitigation systems installed throughout the state. Systems were inspected by experienced, certified mitigators to ensure they meet minimum work standards. Data from the reports were compiled and used to correct any critical issues, inform mitigators about the most current standards, and establish a benchmark to track future improvement.

Indiana legislature has passed amendments to the radon code to revise definitions and to revise the certification and standards requirements applicable to radon testing, radon mitigation, and laboratory analysis. In modernizing the statues, Indiana took the next steps to evaluate the effectiveness of the mitigations being performed in the state.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management partnered with AARST to provide radon inspections of mitigations during 2021. Contract inspectors reviewed 55 mitigation systems and documented deficiencies. This project has resulted in continuing discussions regarding inspections between the department and AARST.
