In Memoriam: Susie Shimek

CRCPD shares news of the passing of Susie Shimek, who was a devoted supporter of radonleaders.org and the state programs who have worked to reduce exposure to excessive radon through their many programs. An announcement follows:

Susie Brown Shimek, 65, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away on August 2nd, 2022, in Leesburg, Virginia. Susie Brown Shimek was born in Clarksville, Tennessee. She attended Clarksville High School, Vanderbilt University, and Austin Peay State University. She began her career in the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Division of Air Pollution Control. Later Susie had a 27-year career with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). During her distinguished tenure at the EPA, Susie worked tirelessly as a nationally recognized expert to reduce lung cancer deaths from radon. Most recently, she was promoted to a supervisory position and led national programs aimed at helping children with asthma by controlling indoor asthma triggers, and improving indoor air quality in the nation’s schools.
