Montana Adopted Radon-Reduction Strategies

"The Montana Building and Commercial Measurements Bureau adopted and incorporated by reference the IRC Appendix F as a voluntary part of the state construction code. Within the state, local jurisdictions can elect to adopt the radon construction requirements." (See https://bsd.dli.mt.gov/building-codes-permits/)

Overview of EPA’s State and Tribal Indoor Radon Grants Program: A Focus on Activities Conducted During 2022, published in February 2023, notes this as an accomplishment. (https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2023-02/2022%20Annual%20SIRG%20Activities%20Report.pdf)

Other strategies to encourage radon-reduction in building are provided by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality. The Department provides information and discussion about radon-resistant new construction on its website, including topics such as:

• What are radon-resistant features?
• When should radon-resistant construction be considered?
• What are the benefits of radon-resistant construction?
• How much does it cost to reduce radon in an existing home?
• Who should I hire to install radon-resistant features?
• Should a home built with radon-resistant features be tested?
• What are the codes or standards for radon-resistant new construction?
• Are there recognized methods for testing soil gas to estimate radon potential in a future building?
