In 2021, the Vermont legislature passed a law requiring all schools to test for radon, and in 2022, an extension was granted giving schools until June 30, 2025, to complete testing. Public schools are to conduct measurements in accordance with ANSI/AARST protocols. Results of measurements are to be available to each employee and student at the school. If a radon problem is found, the Vermont Department of Health Radon Program recommends schools take action to fix it.

The Program provides Best Practices for Fixing Radon Problems and templates for making required notifications.

In Vermont, around 12% of schools that have tested have had results about the EPA recommended action level of 4.0 pCi/L. Some results have been as high as five times the action level.
