The State of Washington has enacted legislation for radon reduction to minimize exposure in residences and inform the public about radon through real estate transactions. “Overview of EPA’s State and Tribal Indoor Radon Grants Program: A Focus on Activities Conducted During 2023,” notes this as an accomplishment for a “Successful Approached for Reducing Radon.”
EPA writes: “Washington state mandates that all new construction must minimize exposure to radon through ventilation and radon-resistant construction requirements. Sellers are also required to disclose known radon levels in their homes. These policies establish comprehensive statewide measures to minimize radon exposure in new construction and ensure transparency in real estate transactions.”
Washington Enacted Legislation includes:
RCW 64.06.020 - Washington State requires that sellers disclose known radon levels in the sale of their home in the Environmental Section of the seller’s disclosure statement. The real estate disclosure statement requires that known environmental hazards are disclosed. The seller must disclose to the buyer by answering this question: “Are there any substances, materials, or products in or on the property that may be environmental concerns, such as asbestos, formaldehyde, radon gas, lead-based paint, fuel or chemical storage tanks, or contaminated soil or water?”
RCW 4.24.560 - Washington State requires that all new construction minimizes exposure to radon through ventilation and radon resistant construction requirements. The state provides resource information about construction at https://doh.wa.gov/community-and-environment/contaminants/radon
