Montgomery County, Maryland requires radon testing for multifamily (including
condominiums) and single-family rental housing, as well as disclosure and mitigation of radon
hazards above the EPA’s recommended action level. This requirement is administered by the
Department of Housing and Community Affairs. The DHCA website contains information for
landlords and tenants. See

EPA recognized this as a “Successful Approach for Reducing Radon Risk using Regulations and
Building Codes.”

According to the DHCA, “Montgomery County is among eight counties that have been
designated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as having the highest potential indoor
radon levels in Maryland. Testing is the only effective way to determine high levels of radon
exposure in a home.”
