The Vermont residential energy code was updated to include radon mitigation as an option that can be used as part of a compliance plan. EPA recognized this as a “Successful Approach for Reducing Radon Risk using Regulations and Building Codes.”

“Vermont Residential Building Standards (RBES) Energy Code Handbook
Sixth Edition Base & Stretch Energy Code,” Effective July 1, 2024, is available at https://publicservice.vermont.gov/sites/dps/files/documents/2024-VT_Residential_Energy_Code_Handboo…

This handbook contains information explaining the key requirements of Vermont’s Residential Building Energy Standards (“RBES” or the “Energy Code”) for residential construction. “Chapter 6: The Package Plus Points Prescriptive Compliance Method for Base Code and Stretch Code” explains how to meet the Energy Code via the Package Plus Points compliance pathway.
Table 6.2, “Required Points by Building Size for Base Code and Stretch Code,” addresses radon. The system uses a points requirement to achieve compliance and radon mitigation is assigned points.

A Radon Mitigation System is listed as a component, described as “radon mitigation following EPA Standards of Practice installed and documented for homeowner.”

Points assigned are as follows:

Toward the 2024 Vermont Residential Building Energy Standards (RBES) Certificate
Radon mitigation system (1 pt)

Toward 2024 Vermont Owner / Builder Disclosure Statement Building Technical Details
Radon mitigation system (1 pt)
