National Radon Poster Contest Metrics
Summary of a presentation by Eleanor Divver, Radon Coordinator, Utah Small Business Environmental Assistance Program

The National Radon Poster Contest had 18 states participating in 2024. One goal of the contest is “Growing Radon Risk Reduction through ART.”
Contest official topics include:
● What is radon?
● Where does radon come from?
● How does radon get into our homes?
● Radon can cause lung cancer.
● Test your home for radon.
● Mitigating radon in your home

Evaluating Risk Reduction
The CRCPD E-25 Committee on Radon sponsors the annual radon poster contest and was interested in knowing “Is the Poster Contest causing Radon Risk Reduction?”
The participating States survey were asked the following questions:
● # of County's Participated:
● # of Teachers Participated:
● How do you promote poster/video contest in your State:
● Future Goals to increase Participation:

Suggested Future Metric
The Committee learned states publicize the contest with emails to science teachers. Suggested additional metrics for states to track and share include:
● Number of student homes tested for radon. Note if any high levels.
● Number of student homes mitigated for radon.
● How do you promote the contest?
● How do you use the art?
● Any significant stories from the poster contest?

The Committee asks states to share information in order to improve radon metrics and quantify how many families are testing and mitigating as a result of their radon awareness generated by the contest. These measures are especially valuable for reporting to EPA regarding the State Indoor Radon Grants. States are requested to track mitigation efforts which would be valuable information to have as well.
