If the filters have radium in them, as David Grammer suggested, it will take a lot longer than 4 months.

If you work in Connecticut, I would appreciate it if you get a meter and check filters before disposal. (It is a good idea in any state). If they are hot (over 20 uR/hr over background on contact) hold them until the dose rate drops off. 4 months will usually work. In the attached example a 500 uR/hr bag, a few feet in from the side of a 100 cubic yard trailer caused a dose rate of 40 uR/hr on the side of the trailer. It read background after 4 months. I did not check it monthly. We had seven of these last year. All of our Incinerators and most of the MSW transfer stations and metal recycling facilities have very sensitive rad monitors positioned on the scales.
Thanks

Thank you all for sharing your knowledge. Fortunately, this house is on city water. The concern is over using the well for gardening and watering goats and chickens. We have recommend the homebuyer run additional tests for uranium, radium, etc. If anyone knows of any toxicology uptake studies on goats, chickens, plants and eggs that would be helpful J
We also have concerns like David stated about filtering this water due to filter disposal issues, I bet we’d be setting off the alarms at the landfill. Any other ideas? Apparently this neighborhood is a known hot spot from an EPA study in the 80’s and EPA got all of the homeowners to go on city water. Way before my time J Thanks again, you all are a great community to work with. Chrys

Chrys,
Don’t forget the parent (Radium) & Grandparent (Uranium) of Radon are minerals which dissolve into the water.
The initial test for these elements would be a Gross Alpha in Water Test.
All 3 are present in every sample in varying ratios.
All are dangerous.
Even at low levels the minerals need to be considered when pre treating for the radon in water unit.
Some filters can attach the radium to a concentration which make the filter impossible to dispose & that cannot be removed from the filter thru backwash.
Let’s say a home with 40,000 pCi/L of radon in the water has 5 to 10 pCi/L of radium. Let’s also assume the home has high iron which is being filtered with a “Birm” filter, this could produce 135 pCi/gram on the filter material in 3 years. This would be based on normal water use of 75 GPD per person.
This tank would measure over 300 micro r on the surface of the tank & could not be disposed thru normal house hold garbage.
This is a very complex subject.
Thank You,
David Grammer

Chrys,What I cite in MURC courses is:Radon in groundwater ranges from about 100 pCi/L to nearly 3 million pCi/L. My cited source is Otton, J.K. (1992) The Geology of Radon, U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. Geological Service, Denver, COWhenever possible, I use peer-reviewed sources. If someone has a more recent peer-reviewed source, please forward that to the group.Happy New Years,Bill
