Adding Radon Resistant Features to the IBC

When constructing new buildings in areas with high levels of radon, reduction of radon exposure risk is not an amenity. Yet radon reduction is included only in an optional appendix in the International Residential Code (IRC) and is not addressed at all in the International Building Code (IBC), which covers schools, apartment buildings, and many other types of structures.

At its hearing at the International Code Council Conference in Dallas in May 2012, the IBC committee did not accept NCHH’s January 2012 proposals for requiring radon reduction features for schools and apartment buildings in highest-risk areas. However, members of the IBC committee endorsed the notion of including radon reduction provisions in the IBC and made several suggestions for amending these proposals for future submission.

With technical expert support from Dave Kapturowski and Matt Koch who are leaders in the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists, NCHH has amended our proposals for requiring radon reduction features for schools and apartment buildings in highest-risk areas to reflect this input. NCHH will submit new versions of the proposals for consideration at the Final Action Hearing October 24-28 at the International Code Council Conference in Portland OR.

The new versions must be submitted as comments no later than August 1. We are seeking feedback on the attached from key stakeholders by Friday July 20 so that we can consider your suggestions and incorporate improvements in time to submit August 1. I recognize that this is a very short turnaround time, and that everyone is busy (and a very few lucky people may be on vacation), but we need your comments by Friday July 20. Please reply to Dave, Matt, and me with any comments. If it would be more convenient to discuss, please email me to set up a time for me to meet with you by telephone.

Thank you very much for your support.
